Hardened Carbon Steel Washers (ASTM F436)

The ASTM F436 Hardened Washer is a circular plate with a hole, manufactured from heat-treated medium-carbon steel, designed to be used under the head of a bolt or the face of a nut. Its primary function in a high-strength joint, such as one using A193 B7 Stud Bolts and A194 2H Nuts, is to distribute the clamping load over a wider area, preventing damage (embedment) to the flange or base material. It also serves to bridge oversized holes and provide a smooth bearing surface for tensioning the fastener. These washers are quenched and tempered to achieve high hardness, ensuring that the washer itself does not yield or deform under the high pre-load stress applied by the mating fasteners. Zeron Fasteners manufactures F436 washers in sizes and thicknesses compatible with heavy hex bolting dimensions.
